Japanese persimmons

Image
It's been a bumper crop of persimmons on the old tree that we transplanted many years ago from our first garden . It must be close to 25 years old now .   I harvested over 30 fruits early on, worrying about the weight of them on the branches. But the 25-odd fruits left on the tree continued to develop, and after the hard frosts and unusually low temperatures, have ripened nicely ON the tree, so I've just harvested them. I made some persimmon bars this evening, have eaten quite a few fresh, and will freeze the rest as pulp (for future persimmon bread and bars!)

Harvest time and home

Our American Thanksgiving is one of few iconic American holidays. It means family, thanks, gratefulness, harvest time, and home. We celebrate the sharing of the first Thanksgiving, native American turkeys, cranberries, corn, and pumpkin. homemade bread and persimmons And whether we're with a large group of family and friends, or celebrate in a simple way, it's definitely time to be thankful for our blessings and the harvest that we share.

Sustainable agriculture initiatives

I've been attending a Carolina Farm Stewardship Association annual conference this weekend (my first time attending). This year, it's nearby, and it's been quite interesting. But it's welcome, to be sure, and I'm heartened by the numbers of younger people involved, as well as passionate folks of all ages. I haven't thought a great deal about food security issues, but it's an important thing to consider. Why not support local farmers when we can and grow more of our own vegetables and fruits, if we can? Or Plant a Row for the Hungry ? (This is a Garden Writers Association initiative). Many of us have space to do so. Or, why not participate in '...

A watching hawk

Image
I've seen a hawk perched up high in a declining oak in the early morning for some time. The tree is below our big parking lot (at work), but gives him/her a great view of the meadows in the morning. It's one of our red-shouldered hawks - we have two pairs, I think, at the Garden where I work. Today I had my camera, so was able to 'see' a bit closer. A mockingbird was singing nearby. And persimmons were ripe and ready to eat.
