Living Alongside Nature : Pirates Bay House & Pavilions

Image
I was in complete awe when I first saw this house . For me, it embodies the perfect combination of living alongside nature and simplicity. This wonderful coastal home enjoys breathtaking views of Pirates Bay from one side and the company of a Eucalypti forest, native birds and wildlife on the other. What more can you ask for… The house sits on a constrained and relatively steep site. A simplified plan created a ten meter suspended cantilever – a semi-transparent platform, which allows dramatic ocean vistas to be seen through the trees. I love the shifting perception as you approach the house; although at first it seems as a dominant structure, inside you feel as if nature has taken over, allowing sound, views and moonlight to flood the entire living space. Adjacent to the house, you will find two small pavilions, nestled into the terrain – Perfect for summer family use. Both buildings feature heavy and slender structures as well as solid and transparent planes, opening u...

Modern Living Down Under

Image
This modern house sits in a rural site that slopes south to north in Victoria, Australia. The owner wanted a family home that will engage with the environment, while remaining protected and secure – a house that will feel warm and sheltered in winter, while also open and light filled through summer. The result – a beautiful, contemporary home that stretches out to its gorgeous surroundings. Rather than creating a flat area to build upon, the lightweight structure is both nestled into the existing topography and floating above it, wrapping around the sites contours and opening to natural ground level at various access points. The house is divided into public and private area, featuring an open plan living, dining and kitchen space, gallery and master bedroom with floor-to-ceiling glazing, opening up to decking and natural scenery. One of the most prominent Japanese elements embedded in the design of this house are the Shoji screens, that allow the central bedrooms to o...

Modern Architecture House Design by TVH

Image
This beautiful modern architecture house design depicts a summer house in the Stockholm Archipelago by Tham & Videgard Hansson Arkitekter (TVH). It is a light-weight building made out of wood and glass, where the horizontal black exterior relates to the vertical of tall grown pine trees and the layout of the plan itself is generated by the specifics of the amazing archipelago site. This minimalistic modern architecture house design has been placed on a flat surface between two mountain rocks while enjoying both the sun in the south and the sea in the west. The house is organized in layers, with the small rooms located in the back while the rest of the house expands in relation to the wooden deck standing out as an open platform crisscrossed by sliding glass, letting the outside-in. The zig-zag layout also provides several outside places offering shelter from the strong archipelago winds. TVH created the perfect summer home for a northern getaway – Modern architecture at ...

Loblolly house design

Image
I came across Philadelphia based, KieranTimberlake architecture firm and immediately fell in love with their architecture natural interpretation for the Loblolly house design. The Loblolly house is a residential architecture project located in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, or by its Algonquin name: “great shellfish bay”, a semi-enclosed coastal body of water with a free connection to the open sea. Inspired by the area’s tall pines, this 2,200 square-foot single family residence is positioned between a dense grove of loblolly pines and a lush foreground of saltmeadow cordgrass and the bay. In order to fuse the natural elements with the architectural design, the house location is defined by the elements of trees, tall grasses, the sea, the horizon, the sky and the western sun. I especially liked the concept of placing the house on timber piles foundations, minimizing the disruption to the ground while literally dwelling in a house among and within the trees. Now, who wouldn’t wa...

The House at Jardin del Sol is an amazing modern house by architects Corona y P. Amaral Arquitectos. Located on the edge of a natural cliff in Tenerife Canary Islands, Spain, this house is surrounded by the elements of wood and water; looking over magnificent views of the cliff, a black sand beach, mount Teide and all the north coast of Tenerife island. Made of treated concrete and glass walls over a timber platform, the House at Jardin del Sol consists of a double high space containing the living-room, studio and kitchen and a narrow space containing a bedroom and service areas, enclosed by timber shutters which open up to magnificent sunsets. Both living areas are organize like an L-shape around a freestanding canopy providing shade and an infinity pool located at the edge of the timber platform. I can already feel the sea breeze… Link
