It was nice to see the sedum bed again, as the snow melted rapidly on a warm winter day (~50°F) in the mountains.  It was a welcome change to have sun and mild temperatures.  Mocha behind newly emerged sedum bed Not having grown up with snow and cold, snow is a treat, but prolonged slippery ice and cold isn't so welcome.  I enjoyed walking this morning without worrying about tripping on an ice patch!

Then end of another year and decade brings the occupants of The Thrifty Garden Home pondering all that took place .. and wondering what the new year ahead will bring.  2010 was a good year all in all.  Here are the goals I listed a year ago for 2010 with results in gold: drinking in the view from the front porch rocker .. with a blanket, of course! never take my hungry children grocery shopping ... a given on a tight budget! take my own reusable grocery bags WITH me instead of leaving them at home or in the car trunk ... about 1/3 successful ;( grow, can, preserve, freeze enough food to last from summer to summer ... not quite there yet .. but 50% of what we eat is from our garden and a local farm purchase no out of season ... grown out of country produce ... this was easier than I thought buy local and organic when possible ... this was easier during the growing season .. I canned from our garden and the local farm buy only local farm meats (Thanks to watching the movie

Aqua silk draperies, candle sconces and mirror... These are in place, but a paint job is coming.  Here is a sneak peek at our lovely new bedding.  A washed-out pink ruffly coverlet at the bottom of the bed layered over a white Raymond Waites embroidered duvet cover. A sheer white ruffled toss pillow Some blue Ralph Lauren floral sheets  and some Martha Stewart rugs to keep our toes warm. A few yards of that Rachel Ashwell floral fabric I found on  Ebay will make up nicely into a cozy window seat  hubs is going to build in the dormer. See that fabulous floral in my inspiration room? All of the pinks and blues and creamy whites are so pretty. So, while I figure out how I want to put this all together, peruse the paint charts and paint the room, do a little sewing,  hang up a picture or two... Half of our visitors left today. Sam and Kate were driving Alex back down to PLymouth before heading home to Teweksbury and had gamely volunteered to take Linas down to Plymouth as well. I think that was before they realised just how much luggage Linas had with him. He had managed to carry an awful lot of luggage up on the train, after all you can't separate a man and his PC. It was an exercise in spatial logistics to get all the luggage in but with some bags sitting on the youngsters' laps and Milo the dog scheduled to be perched on Sam's lap it was all sorted. L-R, Linas , Vytas , Romas , me and Peter. After a chilly photo session, (a family tradition), we waved goodbye to the travellers and wished them a safe journey home. As usual our boys like to pose some action shots to show their true characters. The rest of the dismally gloomy afternoon is being spent with Vytas and Romas finishing off a wargame in the conservatory while I motivate myself for yet more

I ran across this sculpture installation that really caught my eye.  A really simple fireplace wall composition with one spectacular piece of art.  The glass wheat sculpture is designed by Canlis Glass out of Seattle, Washington.  Check it out. Simple composition of the fireplace wall.  A contemporary fire box and open display niche sit side by side.  Wheat sculpture centered above. Lighting is important here as it really emphasizes the overall texture of the glass. The stems of glass are set into the base of the sculpture; which in this case also serves as the fireplace mantel. I don't want to know how much this costs. I would imagine that this unique glass sculpture is cost prohibitive.  But the idea of the fireplace wall can be borrowed.  Keep the composition very simple.  No need for a fancy fireplace surround with expensive stone and and an ornate mantel.  Instead just place one interesting piece of art above.  Beautiful idea.
